Yikes! This post is over a year old!
If you think it deserves a rewrite please get in touch or leave a comment.
— Thanks, Ash.
1. Unlocking a domain
For some domains, 123-REG includes a lightweight safeguard to prevent unauthorized users from starting domain transfers: registrar lock. You might also see it written as “domain lock.”. When a domain is locked, it prevents people from transferring the domain to another registrar.
Only the registrant can enable or disable this lock. You need to unlock the domain on 123-REG before beginning the transfer.
Login to 123-REG and go to the dashboard. Find the domain in the ‘Choose domain…’ dropdown and click on the green ‘Manage’ button.
On the ‘Manage domain <domain>’ screen, click on ‘Manage domain locking’ underneath the ‘Domain transfers’ heading.
Finally, make sure the toggle is set to ‘OFF’. You will know that the domain is unlocked as it will say quite clearly “The domain <domain> is not locked”
(For non *.uk domains) Request an auth code
Cloudflare needs to confirm with 123-REG that the transfer of domain is authorised. To do that, 123-REG will provide an authorization code to you.
This code is often referred to as an authorization code, auth code, authinfo code, or transfer code. You will need to input that code to complete your transfer to Cloudflare. Cloudflare will use it to confirm the transfer is authentic.
Login to 123-REG and go to the dashboard. Find the domain in the ‘Choose domain…’ dropdown and click on the green ‘Manage’ button.
On the ‘Manage domain <domain>’ screen, click on ‘Request Auth code’ underneath the ‘Domain transfers’ heading.
WARNING: when you request an Auth Code, 123-REG will disable the auto renewal of the domain name so be sure you are ready to do the transfer once you have the Auth Code otherwise you will need to re-enable auto renewal if you abandon the transfer!
2. Initialise the domain transfer
Login to Cloudflare and go to the Domain Transfer management screen.
Once on this screen, click on the ‘Transfer’ link to the left of the ‘Manage domains’ heading.
You will be presented with the price for each transfer. When you transfer a domain, you are required by ICANN to pay to extend its registration by one year from the expiration date. You can remove domains from your transfer by selecting x.
You will not be billed at this step. Cloudflare will only bill when you input the auth code and confirm the contact information at the conclusion of your transfer request.
(For non *.uk domains) Input the auth code
In the next page, input the authorization code for each domain you are transferring. You also need to unlock each domain so that Cloudflare can process your request.
Approve the transfer with 123-REG
Once you have requested your transfer, Cloudflare will begin processing it. 123-REG will email you to confirm your request to transfer which will include a link to confirm the transfer request. If you click that link, you can accelerate the transfer operation.
If you do not act on the email, 123-REG waits up to five days to process the transfer to Cloudflare.
Confirm or input your contact information
In the final stage of the transfer process, input the contact information for your registration. Cloudflare Registrar redacts this information by default but is required to collect the authentic contact information for this registration. It is important that you provide accurate contact information.
Failure to provide accurate information and/or failure to verify the information may result in suspension or deletion of your domain.
You can modify the contact information, if needed:
- From your Account Home, select Registrar.
- Under the Manage tab, select Edit in the Default Contact card.
- Update your information.
After entering the contact information, agree to the domain registration terms of service by selecting Confirm transfer.
(For *.uk domains) Update the IPS tag
WARNING: If you update the IPS tag in 123-REG before completing the checkout process on Cloudflare, the transfer request will be automatically rejected. You must complete the checkout process before requesting the IPS tag update.
Once you have completed the checkout process on Cloudflare go back to 123-REG.
Login to 123-REG and go to the dashboard. Find the domain in the ‘Choose domain…’ dropdown and click on the green ‘Manage’ button.
On the ‘Manage domain <domain>’ screen, click on ‘IPS Tag’ underneath the ‘Domain transfers’ heading.
WARNING: This action is not reversible without interaction from a third party (either Nominet UK or the holder of the new IPS TAG). If you change the tag, you will not be able to modify the nameservers through the 123-REG control panel.
If you are sure you want to change the IPS Tag, enter CLOUDFLARE
in the box and click the “Change IPS Tag Now” button.
Once you have changed the IPS Tag, 123-REG will remove the DNS and forwarding services for your domain in 48 hours.
The IPS tag change can take up to 24 hours. You can check it yourself by using https://who.is/whois/ and looking for the “Registrar: [Tag = XXX]”
The domain will also be removed from the 123-REG control panel as we cannot make changes to it once the tag has been changed.
The tag must be updated within seven days of completing the checkout process or the transfer will fail.
Cloudflare will receive a notice once 123-REG updates the IPS tag. After that, Cloudflare will finish transferring your domain.
